The Week

Monaco Grand Prix weekend is not about the race. The race is ninety minutes of cars following each other in a line because the circuit is too narrow to overtake. The weekend around it, however, is the most concentrated display of wealth, access, and spectacle in the European sporting calendar. This is the guide to that weekend.

Nice, Then Seven Minutes by Air

Ch. 01The Arrival

Nice, Then Seven Minutes by Air

Fly into Nice Côte d'Azur. The helicopter from Nice to Monaco Héliport takes seven minutes and costs €160 one way. Book through Monacair or Heli Air Monaco directly. The alternative is forty-five minutes along the Corniche by car, which is beautiful and considerably cheaper and still ends at the same place.

Ch. 02The Stay

Columbus Monaco

There are three hotels in Monaco that matter. Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo sits directly on Casino Square and is booked by February of the preceding year by families who have been coming since the 1970s. Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo is fifty metres away, quieter, and releases rooms in March when Hôtel de Paris guests cancel. Columbus Monaco is in Fontvieille, away from the circuit noise, direct access to the port. It is where the people who have done Grand Prix before stay. No lobby scene, no posturing, a genuine night's sleep during a weekend when that is harder than it sounds.

Grandstand K, Thursday Practice

Ch. 03The Circuit

Grandstand K, Thursday Practice

Grandstand K sits at Turn 1, Sainte Dévote, the first corner where the race is decided in the opening seconds. Every overtake attempt of the weekend happens here. Book through the Automobile Club de Monaco directly. Thursday practice day is when the pit lane opens for a public walking session. Tickets are significantly cheaper than race day, access is better than any grandstand, and you walk the actual circuit. Most people skip Thursday because they do not know this.

Ch. 04The Yacht

Port Hercule, Race Day

Port Hercule sits inside the circuit. During race weekend, yachts moored in the port have unobstructed views of the swimming pool section, the chicane before the tunnel that produces the closest racing of the weekend. A day charter on a 50-60ft yacht moored in the port for race day runs €8,000 to €15,000 depending on size and position. Book through Yachtico, Boatbookings, or Click&Boat. January at the latest. The port fills by February.

Ch. 06The Night

The Four-Night Lineup

Grand Prix weekend runs Thursday to Sunday, and the nightlife circuit is its own parallel event. The venues are five: Lilly's, Twiga, Turbo, Jimmy'z, and Amber Lounge. Each night has its own configuration. June 4 (Thursday): Rampa at Lilly's, 50 Cent at Twiga, SwaeLee and Rae Sremmurd at Lilly's. June 5 (Friday): Pawsa at Lilly's, Hugel at Jimmy'z, &Me at Turbo, Anyma and Argy at Twiga. June 6 (Saturday): Adriatique at Turbo, Central Cee and Lil Baby at Lilly's, Fisher at Jimmy'z, Jamie Jones at Twiga. June 7 (Sunday, race night): John Summit at Lilly's, Bob Sinclair at Twiga, Anotr and Who Made Who at Turbo, Black Coffee at Jimmy'z. Amber Lounge runs Friday and Saturday as the official paddock after-party — former drivers, current team principals, the people who know them. Book Amber Lounge through the official site in January. For Twiga and Jimmy'z, table reservations open six to eight weeks before the weekend.
